We live in the urban society full of dogs and cats that represent to many people only animal connection they enjoy. It is extremely important to keep those animal-human interaction safe and positive. All dogs can bite. Over half of all dog bites occur on the owner’s property. Dog bites, especially to young children, are dramatic and can have severe consequence.
Safe with my dog Sammy program was developed by the Council for Children and Families Inc. (CCF) to help very young children learn how to safely interact with dogs at home as well as dogs they meet on street, in parks and playgrounds. Most children love dogs. They are naturally drawn to cute animal and want to touch, hug, and kiss its face. Most dogs hate it. Most very young children, unless they taught differently, treat dog like a toy. We can change it and help children to be safe, in happy, mutually beneficial relationship with man’s best friend- the dog.
Safe with my dog Sammy program is free of charge. We accept donations. All adults participants must sign a program agreement. Participants must give permission for documenting program’s activities by pictures, videos, and other methods. Documentation obtained from Safe with my dog Sammy can be use freely by Council for Children and Families Inc.
Safe with my dog Sammy program is designed for children from 3 years to 7 years old, their teachers, parents, and caregivers. It has four (4) components that can be used together or separately depending on the need, ages of children and enthusiasm of caregivers.
Component #1 Dog bite prevention class for teachers and educators.
Teachers will come together to take Washington State Department of Children, Youth &Families approved class: “How to be safe around dogs. Safety precautions and safe behavior techniques for children.” It is designed to make bite prevention easy and fun. Teachers will learn how to guide children into a correct way to interact with dogs and how to avoid types of human behavior that will provoke dogs to bite. Class is full of practical techniques on meeting strange dogs and playing with home pets in the way that teach empathy and responsibility. As a bonus you will learn how to speak dog’s language and will be able to have your first conversation within a week from receiving certificate of completion.
